How to Work Legally
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can work without a work visa. Non-EU employed workers usually need prior work authorisation within quota rules, then a visa, then a residence permit.
EU / EEA / Swiss citizens
You may work freely. Complete tax code (codice fiscale), residence registration, and INPS enrolment as your employer requires.
Non-EU citizens
Your employer applies for authorisation at the One-Stop Shop for Immigration. After approval, collect your visa at the Italian consulate, enter Italy, and apply for a work residence permit within eight days.

Most common path for subordinate employment subject to annual quotas. Timing depends on when the quota decree opens.
EU Blue Card / highly qualified work
For qualified professionals meeting Italian Blue Card or highly skilled criteria; may follow a different channel than seasonal/quota roles.
Entry visa after authorisation
Once authorisation is granted, the consulate issues the visa. Use it within the validity window stated on the authorisation.
Permesso di soggiorno for work
Apply at the competent immigration desk/post office kit shortly after arrival; biometrics and permit issuance follow.
