¿Qué es Erasmus Mundus?

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) are high-level international Master’s programmes designed and delivered by consortia of universities. You usually study in at least two countries and receive a joint, double or multiple degree.

Unlike Erasmus+ exchange mobility, you apply directly to each Master’s consortium — not through a single EU student form, and not only via your current university’s Erasmus office.

Competitive scholarships are available for top-ranked students worldwide. Even without a scholarship, many programmes accept self-funded students if places remain.

Erasmus+ mobility is a temporary study period while you stay enrolled at home. Erasmus Mundus is a full Master’s programme with its own admissions, tuition rules and multi-country study track.

At least 3 higher education institutions in at least 3 different countries (including programme countries / eligible partners as defined by the call)
Duration: 1–2 academic years (60, 90 or 120 ECTS)

Becas — qué esperar

An Erasmus Mundus scholarship is highly competitive. It typically contributes to participation costs and provides a monthly living allowance plus support related to travel and installation — exact components are defined per call and programme.

Previous Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders are not eligible for another EMJM scholarship. Always read the programme’s FAQ for nationality, residency and eligibility nuances.

If you are not awarded a scholarship, ask whether self-funded places exist and what tuition / insurance rules apply.

Elegibilidad y requisitos

A Bachelor’s degree, or be in the final year of Bachelor studies (you must graduate before the Master starts)
Or an officially recognised Bachelor-equivalent level of learning
Programme-specific requirements: language tests, CV, motivation letter, references, portfolio, etc.
Passport valid for the full mobility period and visa-ready civil documents
Proof of English (or other teaching languages) at the level required by the consortium

Cuándo solicitar

Most applications open between October and January for programmes starting the following academic year.

Each Master’s website publishes its own deadline and document checklist — never rely only on a generic calendar.

Selection results often arrive in spring. Visa appointments for non-EU students should be planned immediately after acceptance.

Browse the official catalogue

Use the Erasmus Mundus Catalogue to filter by field, country and keywords. Shortlist 3–6 realistic programmes.

Read each consortium website

Check teaching language, mobility track (which cities/semesters), fees, and the exact application portal.

Prepare a strong file

Diploma, transcripts, language proof, motivation letter tailored to that programme, CV, references, passport scan.

Submit before the deadline

Apply directly to the consortium. Keep confirmation emails and reference numbers.

Interview / ranking

Some programmes interview shortlisted candidates. Prepare to explain your academic fit and mobility plan.

Accept & prepare visas

Once selected, follow the consortium onboarding: insurance, residence permits, housing and first-city arrival.

Bachelor diploma (or enrolment certificate if graduating soon) + transcripts
Sworn / certified translations if documents are not in an accepted language
Language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, or consortium-specific proof)
Motivation letter and Europass or academic CV
Two academic recommendation letters (sometimes professional)
Passport, photo, and any programme-specific forms or portfolios

Consejos para destacar

Write a motivation letter that mentions the consortium partners and mobility track by name
Show academic continuity: why this Master, why these countries, why now
Ask referees early — late letters kill otherwise strong files
Do not copy-paste the same letter to every programme
Prepare apostilles / legalisations in parallel if your destination countries require them for visas
