Residence card renewal

Digital Mercurio / Extranjería renewal — work, study, family and TIE.

In Spain, “renewing the card” usually means two steps: (1) renew the residence/stay authorisation via Extranjería, then (2) issue/renew the physical TIE. Your NIE number itself does not expire — the authorisation and card do.

Timing and general rules

  • Main window: within the 60 days before expiry.
  • Filing is often still possible up to 90 days after expiry, but late filing can mean surcharges or complications — do not wait.
  • A timely filing usually extends your lawful stay until a decision is issued.
  • Main channel: online via Migraciones / Mercurio with digital certificate or Cl@ve, or via a qualified representative.
  • After approval: National Police appointment for fingerprints/photo and the new TIE.
  • Important: renewing the same category ≠ change of status (e.g. student → worker).

Common documents

  • Correct official form for your authorisation type (e.g. EX-03 for work)
  • Valid passport + full copies when requested
  • Current TIE (both sides)
  • Updated Empadronamiento
  • Modelo 790 fee payment proof (often code 012 depending on the procedure)
  • Photos when collecting the card

1) Work residence renewal (cuenta ajena / propia)

  • Valid employment contract or qualifying new contract/offer
  • Vida laboral and payslips / self-employment proof
  • Social Security alta and employer compliance
  • In some cases: job-search or benefit evidence if the job ended for reasons beyond your control

2) Study stay renewal / extension

  • Current enrolment proof
  • Academic progress / seriousness of studies
  • Sufficient means + valid health insurance
  • Empadronamiento, passport and current TIE

3) Family renewal (reagrupación / EU family)

  • Ongoing family link and cohabitation proof when required
  • Sponsor economic/housing conditions or EU-citizen family-card documents
  • Health cover / Social Security as applicable
  • Updated civil-status documents (translated/legalised when needed)

4) Long-term residence / larga duración

  • The long-term authorisation often remains; you mainly renew the physical TIE
  • Prove continuity and avoid long absences that break eligibility
  • Empadronamiento + passport + current card + fees

5) Highly qualified / EU Blue Card

  • Matching contract/offer and national salary threshold when renewing
  • Social Security, tax and address proof
  • Confirm you are renewing the same category

Practical steps

  1. Identify your authorisation type and mark −60 days from expiry.
  2. Update Empadronamiento and prepare vida laboral / enrolment / family proofs.
  3. Pay the correct Modelo 790 and file via Mercurio / your province channel.
  4. Track the file until a decision.
  5. Book the Police appointment for the new TIE after approval.

How EOB helps

  • Identify the correct renewal type and EX form
  • Review work / study / family evidence before filing
  • Prepare Mercurio, fees and TIE appointment
  • Separate renewals from change-of-status cases
