Spain
Nationality / Citizen
For EU/EEA/Swiss citizens in Spain: focus on your Certificado de Registro UE and Empadronamiento.
Nationality / Citizen
Certificado de Registro UE
The Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE (often the green A4 sheet) proves your registration in Spain’s Central Register of Foreigners. It is mandatory for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens staying more than 3 months. When issued, it also includes your NIE.
Who needs it?
- EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
- Anyone planning to stay in Spain longer than 90 days
- Apply in person within 3 months of entering Spain
Residence conditions (RD 240/2007)
You must prove at least one of the following:
- Employee: employment contract or Social Security registration
- Self-employed: autónomo / activity registration and Social Security proof
- Student: enrolment + sufficient means + health insurance
- Non-active: sufficient resources (often referenced to IPREM) + health cover in Spain
Where and how
- Where: Oficina de Extranjería in your province, or the competent Police station if there is no immigration office
- Appointment: book via Interior cita previa — “Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE”
- Some provinces allow electronic filing with digital certificate or Cl@ve
- The certificate is usually issued immediately after checks and fee payment
Core documents
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Form EX-18 | EU citizen registration request — duplicate, completed and signed |
| Passport / ID | Valid (+ copy). If expired: copy + renewal request |
| Fee Modelo 790 code 012 | Payment receipt before issuance (confirm current amount) |
| Situation proof | Work / self-employed / study / means + insurance as applicable |
| Empadronamiento | Many provinces require a recent certificate/volante (often ≤ 3 months) |
The certificate itself usually does not expire. Non-EU family members follow a separate EU family card route.
